Ghazals for Foley by Yago S. Cura
Ghazals for Foley is a collection of ghazals and non-fiction honoring the memory of American Combat Journalist, James Foley. Mr. Foley gravitated towards all types of people, from all types of backgrounds. But, it's pretty obvious Jim felt personally responsible for informing the world about the atrocities being committed by the Assad regime against its own civilians. In 2012, Foley was kidnapped just inside of Syria; in August of 2014, Foley was murdered by ISIS forces on video after being held for almost two years. Foley was always a spiritual person and a practicing Catholic, so his conversion to Islam while in captivity is a point of serious contemporary speculation. Ghazals for Foley seeks to bridge two seemingly disparate world views by using an ancient Arabic form to address the memory and loss of an American Combat Journalist, and honor his humanistic tendencies.
